The core of this document is structured into several sections.
-
Design Considerations: This section deals mostly with what is VPN and what are the
technical requirements for the different deployments. I used to think
that it is unnecessary, but looking at some design examples and vendor
documentation out there has made me think otherwise.
-
VPN Technologies Supported on FreeBSD: This is an incomplete list of the technologies I have found
useful and supported by FreeBSD. If your favourite is not in there
I am happy to add a new section. This section also provides additional
information for protecting VPNs with an extra IPSEC layer and the
related caveats.
-
Implementation: How to configure some of the VPN technologies on FreeBSD. Information
on ports, utilities, configuration and port specifics and caveats.
Note, that all information for providing an extra protection by an
additional IPSEC layer has been moved to the Technologies section
as it is more or less implementation agnostic.
-
Network Design Notes: This section deals with some of the most common networking
issues like routing, providing clients with settings, as well as
essentials of Windows networking from VPN and RAS perspective. It
also deals with various Windows specific sillies and how to deal
with them from a RAS/VPN design perspective.
-
TODO: Stuff that will appear sooner or later as long as I have had
the time to get around to write it up. It is somewhere in the queue
at present.
