RAID controllers for FreeBSD.
Pointless Rant - 11 Feb 06

Looking for a RAID controller that works on FreeBSD?

Not that you couldn’t find this on your own, but it helps to know that somebody else was able to get something to work before you buy.

I have had good experiences with 3Ware. They are a little bit expensive, but you get what you are paying for.
The price difference comes from the fact that they are true RAID controllers, not a card that pulls resources from you CPU to do its work.

    Damn, I just bought a Highpoint…

I got a 3ware 7000-1 PATA controller awhile back for BSD compatiblity and it worked great. I have a new box now, and got an Areca controller this time. I got it because they have a PCI Express version. I bought a SLI mobo from ASUS and slapped the areca controller in the second PCI-E slot. Since the PCI bus has it’s own pipeline in the mobo, it doesn’t clog up the PCI bus with data transfers. I get 120MB read and write speed on this beast!!

Anyway, nothing against 3WARE, but check out the areca controllers too when you are looking for a BSD conpatible RAID controller.
